Repentance Is Survival

“The extent to which you repent is the extent to which you will survive.”

I heard these words on February 10, 2022. The night before, I’d learned of a betrayal that completely blindsided me, that I knew was going to change everything. It was the final straw in a string of hits and losses that had started in early 2019, stripping and unraveling my entire being.

I went for a drive and asked the Lord what to do and how I was to respond to this heartbreaking news. His response was not at all what I expected: “The extent to which you repent, is the extent to which you will survive.”

In one sentence, the goodness, kindness, and mercy of God smacked me in the face as I began to unpack what this might mean for me practically.

What mattered to Him most was my heart and the work required to ensure that it did not become hardened. That work needed to start with my own repentance, even though I had nothing to do with this egregious wrong. It required a recognition that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23), including me. I needed to ensure that I held this other person’s wrong tenderly with grace. Repentance, even when I wasn’t “wrong,” meant that I could remove the log in my own eye in order to gently and carefully remove the speck in someone else’s, seeing them restored and our relationship made whole again (Matthew 7:3-5, Galatians 6:1-2).

Turns out, this monumental hurt was not the final straw. Following that disappointment would be more hits and losses. The greatest of them being over a year later when I would be the one to fail monumentally, finding myself in the position of being the disappointment. God would once again remind me, “The extent to which you repent, is the extent to which you will survive.” Ideally, I would have repented from the issue sooner and avoided my own failure, but God is so patient with us.

I am so grateful that what I thought was just a lesson to help me navigate the grief of someone hurting me more than I’d ever been hurt turned out to be God positioning me to forgive in that moment. It also taught me how to deal with the grief of my own failings and to develop a heart quick to repent, so that I can walk in step and obedience to Him.

Repentance is the greatest protection for a heart in any stage of life.

Scripture:

Acts 3:19 (NIV)
“Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.”

Reflection:

  1. Jesus’ call to “repent and believe” was a central message of His ministry. When you think of repentance, what comes to mind first? Does it primarily feel like an act of saying “sorry,” or does it feel like an invitation to a deeper transformation?

  2. Metanoia is a Greek word that is traditionally translated as “repentance.” The term itself comes from two root words: “meta,” meaning “beyond” or “after,” and “noia,” which derives from “nous,” meaning “mind” or “thought.” Therefore, a literal translation of metanoia could be understood as a “change of mind” or “beyond the mind.” How might God be inviting you into a mindset shift today?

  3. How might repentance be an invitation to freedom rather than a burden of guilt? Consider how turning toward God, and away from old patterns, offers not just forgiveness but also a new way of thinking and living. What might this look like for you today?

  4. How does repentance prepare your heart for God’s healing and restoration? Reflect on the idea that repentance clears space for God to work. Where might you need to change your thinking to allow for deeper healing?
